The World Health Organization has already designated PM2.5 emissions from vehicles as a Group 1 carcinogen.
The emissions from old diesel trucks and 2-stroke motorcycles in particular have a serious impact on public health.
There are currently more than 21,000 diesel buses and trucks as well as around 120,000 2-stroke motorcycles registered in Taoyuan City.
This is quite a significant number. In response, Taoyuan City Government formulated the “Autonomous Regulations on Developing Taoyuan City as a Low-Carbon-Emission and Green City” which will take effect on January 1, 2017.
The three control measures for vehicles (designation of clean air zones, progressive replacement of city buses, compulsory inspections for old diesel vehicles) are expected to greatly reduce PM2.5 emissions from vehicles and effectively improve air quality.
